Reforestation and Green Belt Reinforcement Project – Bankim, Adamawa Region, Cameroon.
For the past five years, our team has been working diligently in Bankim, located in the Adamawa Region of Cameroon, to combat the encroachment of desertification into the savanna through our reforestation initiative and the reinforcement of the Sahel Green Belt. To date, we have successfully planted over 1,000,000 trees, significantly contributing to soil restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience in the region.
However, one of the major challenges we face is the threat of wildfires during the dry season, which have regrettably destroyed several reforested areas. In response to this issue, we launched an Early Warning System for Wildfire Detection and Response this year. Through this initiative, we have:
- Trained local community members in early fire detection and emergency response;
- Established a community-based communication network utilizing mobile phones to swiftly share fire locations;
- Mobilized surrounding villages to collectively respond and contain wildfires before they spread.
To ensure the effectiveness of this system, we rely on cell phones, particularly older smartphones capable of supporting communication apps like WhatsApp and Signal. Thanks to the generosity of our community members, we have already received over 30 donated phones, which are now instrumental in protecting our environment.
We urge everyone who can to participate in our cell phones donation drive by donating any old smartphone that is no longer in use. Your contribution will enhance our wildfire detection network, safeguard thousands of young trees, and protect our shared environment.
